While receiving my BSN degree, I had the opportunity to join Emory on an immersion trip to Cusco, Peru. In Cusco, a group of students and I worked with a local non-profit organization called CerviCusco whose main mission was to decrease the rates of cervical and breast cancer among Peruvian women. We assisted CerviCusco by providing pap smears, breast and vaginal examinations to over 130 women, as well as blood glucose tests and blood pressure screenings to more than 500 Peruvians. While working in Cusco, we assessed the effects of our work on the population by conducting interviews with the locals regarding their views on cervical cancer and preventative women’s health measures. We were able to understand how to bring home the skills we gained in Peru and apply them to our future jobs as nurses in the United States.
